Tobacco is the only legal consumer product that, when consumers use it as manufacturers intend, kills over half its users. Rejecting vaping just to protect global Big pharma profits from tobacco quit pharmaceuticals is immoral and nonsensical in extreme, as it protects the sales of toxic tobacco cigarettes.
Rejecting vaping is anti-science and is ignorance of the harm reduction potential of this innovative and proven technology. Just a load of codswallop under the influence of Big Pharma’s chequebook. A chequebook which has become the de facto lawmaker.
Regulatory capture is government failure that occurs when a regulatory agency created to act in the public interest (such as in Tobacco Control & Therapeutic Goods Control), rather promotes the commercial profits and political concerns of special interest groups and persons that dominate the industry or field it is regulating. This was summarised by George J. Stigler in 1971 “The Theory of Economic Regulation”: “…as a rule, regulation is acquired by the industry and is designed and operated primarily for its benefits.”
In Australia as well as elsewhere (but not in NZ or the UK), widespread corruption, racketeering and abuse of scientific evidence to protect global pharmaceutical and tobacco commercial interests is occurring. This is the consequence of regulatory capture amid wowful professional ethics and rent-seeking by bureaucrats in powerful and comfortable fiefdoms. This in plain view and within the walls of publicly funded health agencies and political parties.
As a consequence of greed and ideology we witness completely inadequate reasoning against vaping. Reasoning that deliberately misleads the public into continuing to smoke and supports the
habitualisation of tobacco. This palpable conspiracy (to protect cigarettes and Big Pharma drugs from market competition from low risk alternative products) has been unethical, inhumane, crony capitalist, public health malpractice of the worst kind.
He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetuate it. – Martin Luther King Jr.
It is 52 years since January 1964, when the USA Surgeon General’s Report on Smoking and Health revealed the relationship between smoking and cancer. It is very well time that a few good politicians and ethical medical professionals stepped up to the mark to support vaping technology to efficiently displace toxic tobacco smoking by competitive market forces now. This rather than to be complicit in the protracted slaughter of habituated smokers and collateral victims nearby the smoke. Those who are dying and suffering in their thousands are mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, wives, husbands, partners, orphans, children, friends, neighbours and colleagues.
